Female Returning Hit Makers and News Makers

I didn’t get to listen to Janet Jackson’s new album until recently. Boy, I was missing out. Her song, “Shoulda Known Better” is simply gorgeous. It reminds me faintly of Jackson’s “Every Time”. Soft vocals and a faint 90s/00s vibe. Love it. It’s a hit. Oh, Ms. Jackson, how I never knew I missed you so. I guess I shoulda known better.

And speaking of blast’s from the past, Missy Elliot’s new hit single “WTF (Where They From)” is back to school these kids how it’s done. With puppets, Pharrell, dancing and the creative mind of Missy Elliot, she shows she’s unstoppable. So refreshing to hear her come back.

Also, other music I’m listening to, Calvin Harris featuring HAIM, LP,CHVRCHES, Elle King and Lourde.

I just love the “Pray to God” music video from Calvin Harris feating HAIM. These women are elegant and haunting and I love the nature sets. Awesome video.

LP is back with “Muddy Waters”, love this song. It’s a different but RIGHT departure from her previous light-hearted pop tunes. I hope LP keeps digging deep for inspiration for these soulful songs.

CHVRCHES music video for “Leave a Trace” is colorful and the song took me a while to warm to. It’s different, and that’s good. Different is good.

Elle King has been jumping the iTunes charts with this hit “Ex’s and Ohs”. The lyrics are fun and I wish I had thought of it first.

Lastly, I love Disclosure’s “Magnets” featuring Lorde. It’s a unique music video and I actually like Lorde’s modern dancing in the video. It’s artistic and refreshing to see an artist move their body in their own creative way versus a big choreographed scene.

Tune in again soon for some more hit songs.

Music Video Review: Bitch I’m Madonna

From Madonna’s 13th studio album “Rebel Heart” and 3rd single release, the music video for “Bitch I’m Madonna” released today on Tidal.

Anyone who knows me at all knows how much of a Madonna fan I am (I even won front row tickets to the Sticky & Sweet Tour) but this music video was disappointing. Being a big fan from the Ray of Light era, I’ve watched Madonna blend like a chameleon and change with the times.

The “Living for Love” and “Ghosttown” music videos from Rebel Heart were ok enough, but “Bitch I’m Madonna” is quite a departure from Madonna’s usual sound (featuring trap music) and look (I’ve never seen Madonna in hot pink hair extensions).

Madonna’s performance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon was very exciting and fresh and I hadn’t been THAT excited to see a Madonna performance in ages because it was a great performance with tons of energy.

Watch Madonna on Jimmy Fallon Here:

I feel Madonna tried to capture that energy into this music video, and it doesn’t really land on it’s feet. The video follows Madonna strutting down a hotel hallway engaging in kissing guys and girls, joining flash mobs and sock puppets, which ends up on the top of the building partying. The celebrity cameos are screenshots and Nicki Minaj isn’t on set, just on a screen next to Madonna. Most of the celebrity cameos, including Nicki Minaj who raps on the track, filmed separately off the set, which kind of takes the viewer out of the moment. It was fun to see Rita Ora and Chris Rock, but once Beyonce, Miley and Katie Perry flash on screen obviously not recorded on stage with Madonna, just brought down the energy. This wasn’t the video I was expecting, something new from Madonna, something exciting, it was just another music video. I honestly felt the teaser trailer was more interesting than the actual video.

“Bitch I’m Madonna Teaser Trailer”

Madonna, I love you, and yes, we all know you’re the Queen of Pop, but please bring it and do something really new. I’m rooting for you.

Celebrity Cameos: Rita Ora, Chris Rock, Diplo, Miley Cyrus, Beyonce, Katie Perry, Nicki Minaj, Kanye West and Madonna’s sons Rocco and David.

I’m going to say it’s 2 1/2 stars out of 5. It’s great to see the Queen do her thing, but there wasn’t much dancing, the outfits were fun but stars are lost on the injected celebrity cameos. Would have been a hell of a lot more exciting to see all those celebrities dancing in the same room with Madonna and I know Madonna CAN do better. Also a ton of Madonna fans were quite pissed that this music video was released on Tidal. That means any country that doesn’t have Tidal, those fans had no other option to watch the video. Not really a great move for Madonna, a worldwide release is better than a domestic release.

Katy B “Crying for No Reason”

I like to think I have great taste in Pop music, a lot of music I like tends to get popular later on (which I intend on writing a blog of all my correct assumptions on songs I liked that later became hits), so I would like to call out Katy B as another great pop singer to look out for.

At first I wasn’t sure what her voice reminded me of, and then it hit me, Rihanna. She’s a red-headed Rihanna. It’s not what you expect out of this sweet looking girl, and she’s definitely not a “Good Girl Gone Bad” at all. No, she just has a soulful, heart-string pulling quality to her voice, full of soul. This recent single that debuted at the end of 2013 is such a refreshing song.

It’s a ballad, and talks about dealing with the repercussions of not dealing with your emotions. I love this song and have been listening to it a lot over the months.

Check it out and let me know what you think. Unfortunately, out of the other songs I’ve listened to from Katy B, I have not found one nearly as catchy and interesting, so I think her success really depends on future follow-up hits and not past ones. Would love to see this girl become more mainstream.

Edgy Dance Pop – Marina and the Diamonds Releases Electra Heart

Marina and the Diamonds have just released “Electra Heart” in the U.S., which has previously been in the top of the charts in the U.K. Not sure why the U.K. gets these early releases and the U.S. is so cautious about upcoming new pop trends. This also happened with Ellie Goulding and her album which was popular in Europe and finally trickled into American radio here with “Lights”.

Marina and the Diamonds is a refresher from Lady Gaga. If you’re looking for edgy, dance pop, Marina is your girl. “Homewrecker” is on the top of my list, with Ace of Base beats and lyrics that are so true, it hurts. “Power & Control” is fun too, along with “Radioactive”. Her voice is full of soul, and I’d love to see a sing off with her and Lady Gaga. Although, I’ve heard rumors that her live performance is “forced”, which, with these pop personalities should be considered, her music is undeniably catchy and very popular in the indie scene. Will Marina and the Diamonds hit the mainstream American radio soon? Tough to tell when the edgy pop Queen, Lady Gaga retains the throne, but I’d love to see a face off between these two divas and who can be more shocking, lyrically and visually.

M83, Young the Giant, Gavin Degraw & Kimbra

Just updating on a lot of new music I’ve been listening too.

Right now one of my favorite songs is M83’s “Midnight City”. I love the music video. At first it really creeped me out with the kid’s glowing eyes, but as you watch the whole music video, it’s like a mini short film about these X-Men like kids escaping society because they are different and they don’t want to be lab rats. They stay with each other and somewhat become creatures of the night.

Also, one of my favorite new band’s is Young the Giant, I really like their acoustic session way better than their studio recordings.

This catchy radio hit is also on replay on my iPod. Great song, the piano really makes the song along with the lyrics.

Also, this singer has been brought to my attention, and worth a watch.

Coldplay – Paradise

I think Coldplay have outdone themselves with their latest single, “Paradise” and the music video is touching.

The song itself is more of an anthem, and it is more uplifting than previous singles. The music video follows the lonely journey of an elephant escaping the zoo to join his friends back in the wild in Africa. It touches on animal rights, and also on the loneliness of people. This music video story could be relatable to someone in prison, someone living far away from friends and family or someone longing to get back to our roots.

Which, I think, everyone in our modern age in America feels a longing for. Especially with the advent of technology, people are more alone now and isolated then previously in history. We would think technology would bring us together, but it has made us more isolated, in front of our computers. Even though I’m touching on a different topic than maybe what the music video intended, I very well believe that humans are yearning for that paradise, a place in nature with your closest people you can be a part of, than alone by yourself.

What does this music video mean to you?
