New Indie Artist Page Added

To make things easier on this blog to navigate through, I will be adding new pages to help you sift through the content on the blog.

First up, is a list of all the indie artists I have mentioned throughout this whole blog, so if you don’t feel like rummaging through all my blogs, or don’t want to check out the “Indie Artists” tag, this page will list all the indie artists, a short description of the artist and a direct link to the blog they were mentioned in.

Nifty, huh?

I also want to do a Genre page, to find music genres easier on this blog. Let me know if you have any ideas of your own to help your experience of finding good music on this blog!

Thanks!

Indie Artist Mondays: M.4.T.P. – Collective Indie Artist Release & Los Angeles Downtown Artwalk

For this week’s Indie Artist Mondays, I’m going to write a personal blog about musicians that I know here in LA.

M.4.T.P. (Music for the People) is a compilation album of indie artists. My friend and previous beat maker for my release, “Butterfly” (available on iTunes, look up my name Elena Ovalle “Butterfly”), Dane Diamond, has put together various indie artists and is releasing a series of EPs. The music has various genres, from pop to indie rock.

To hear some tracks, click on this link: http://m4tp.bandcamp.com/album/6b

A release party for M.4.T.P. “The Heart as a Theory” will be at Los Angeles Downtown Artwalk this Thursday, April 14th, 8pm -11pm. There will be free copies of the release at the event. Every month  in Los Angeles, there is an artwalk of local artists that has grown very popular. You can check out the Facebook invitation here: http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=192409257470559

Here is the Downtown LA Artwalk WordPress site: http://artwalkla.wordpress.com/

Check out the links, music, and drop by the Artwalk in Downtown LA this Thursday if you’re in town.

Indie Artist Mondays: Gaby Moreno

I’ve been on hiatis from this blog this past week because I’ve been busy looking for a new place to move into and a new job, plus mixing a new song and other things. I got a new job and a new place to move into today, it’s funny how things happen all at once. I’m still reeling because in a week everything is going to change, so it’s a lot. But, let’s go forward here.

Here’s my second installment of Indie Artist Mondays, like I said, it’s quite difficult to keep finding indie artists every week to talk about, but for now, so far so good.

For this week’s Indie Artist Mondays, I’m introducing you to the Guatemalan singer, Gaby Moreno. I was first acquainted with Moreno at a performance for Los Angeles Women in Music (LAWiM) Singer/Songwriter night. Moreno’s voice was unique; she has a disarming personality in person. Calm, positive and soulful, Gaby Moreno commands a stage presence, and her voice sucks you right in. You can tell she’s a sweet heart too. Her music is indie-soul.

Gaby has been getting a lot of buzz here in LA as well. I hear a lot of music professionals talking about her talent. She’s touring the U.S. right now and has an album releasing April 5th called Illustrated Songs.

Check out her out!

Of Verona and Blaqstarr Live at the Music Box in the New Music Seminar

Last night on Valentine’s Day, I attended the New Music Seminar’s Opening Party at the Music Box in Hollywood, CA. The New Music Seminar is a three day event to learn about the music business. You can find out more information here newmusicseminar.com/

Several acts performed that night, although, I just want to report on the ones I liked (because this blog is about music I like, and not so much on ragging on stuff I don’t like), and two of those artists that performed were Of Verona and Blaqstarr.

Of Verona, a band with members from Brooklyn and Canada nestled here in LA, is a new rock band, being MTV’s “Bands to know in 2011”. The lead singer, Mandy Perkins, lead an amazing show. She had spot on vocals, energy, presence and a unique look. Of Verona set an upbeat, although mellow mood in the Music Box theater. They had the crowd moving and really digging the music.

Check out their EP here:

They performed Match, Raining and a couple of other songs. This band is totally worth live. They made my night.

Following was Blaqstarr.

Very fun. The music had heavy bass, repeating hooks, funky dance beats and the crowd was definitely dancing and getting down. At one point, Blaqstarr got to the DJ turntables and was spinning himself. He stopped the music and said that since it was Valentine’s Day, he was getting a message to play a certain song, then proceeded to play “Candlelight” and a singer came out to sing the song. Blaqstarr is from Baltimore and is known for working with M.I.A.

Check out both of these artists. Both are great live, definitely worth seeing.

Indie Artists to Check out

I’ve been meaning to do a blog of indie artists that I feel deserve some more recognition, or at least, worthy of a short snippet listen on iTunes which could potentially lead to more.

Kim DiVine’s album “Square One” is an album that is mellow, think of Ingrid Michaelson or Lisa Loeb. Singer/songwriter type of music with a good production, soothing voice and overall calming effect. The best song is “All Night”, other great contenders are: “Raining”, “Little Things”, “We Could” and “Letting Go”. Last I heard, her music was circulating the college radio network.

Check her out here: http://itunes.apple.com/us/album/square-one/id319213312

Another similar mellow artist with a slight John Mayer vibe is Brent Cates. Mellow music, good driving music and the guitar playing keeps the listener hooked. My favorite songs from the album “Wasted Words” are “She’ll Do” and ” Back to Me”.

Check out his album on iTunes here: http://itunes.apple.com/us/album/wasted-words/id307070829

All right, those are my spotlights for the moment, I’ll be back with more indie artists to report on, stay tuned.
