Returning Back to Music

I haven’t written here in a long time. I’ve been going through a musical journey, so to speak. I had a chance to perform at the Viper Room Acoustic Lounge September 27th, and El Cid October 7th. I wrote two new songs for the occasions and I feel my songwriting has progressed.

I’m about to record acoustic versions of my new songs. I’ve been changing what I want do to with my life, and I don’t want to reveal too much personal information here, but I will be changing some things, but I will still continue music.

As for what I’ve been listening to lately, Pop music is still abundant, and for some reason lately… I’ve been taking a breather from music. I think Pop music nowadays is so eager to grab people’s attention that it doesn’t wait a second to breathe… it’s like a heart attack right from the start. It’s fast-food music. Quick and easy to consume, but afterwards you don’t feel satisfied and you’re hungry again.

I feel that is why Adele is excelling on the charts. Her music is well thought out, good melody lines and an amazing, full sounding voice that is turning fans obsessive.

Here are some songs that I’ve been listening to lately. Enjoy.

Adele’s “Someone Like You”. Obviously good, nothing new there.

Britney’s latest. Britney looks her best here since she was a teenager. I think it’s a very sexy video, and I like the 60’s throwback. Very catchy.

Love this newcomer, Labrinth. I love this music video. Visual to the eye and the bridge chant is awesome. This song was mean to be a classical song. and it’s original.

Team Kelly! Her songs are WAY better than Beyonce’s latest songs by far! I really don’t like the last 3 songs Beyonce came out with, but Kelly’s? All of her songs are catchier. “Motivation” was a little weird at first, but I started to like it. My only gripe about the video, Kelly is wearing way too much make-up. Although, great dance song!

Britney Spears – “I Wanna Go”

I think Brit is looking her best yet in her latest music video, “I Wanna Go”. Fighting against the Paparazzi and police enforcement. It’s a weird, silly music video, with a nod to Michael Jackson. It is what is is, a Britney Spears music video. Fans will be delighted, the song itself is catchy. I find that the chorus is just manipulated synthesizer/auto tune notes. It’s fun, it’s pop and take it for what it is.

2011: The Year of the Female Pop Star

I’ve been wanting to say that for a few months now, but I wasn’t sure if I was too hasty in making that remark. The year isn’t over yet, and hip hop is all over the radio station, so much it’s nauseating how much I can switch back and forth from Eminem to whatever the hip hop artist of the month is.

Not to bash hip hop, I do like good hip hop and Tinie Tempah is definitely refreshing, also Diddy and Kanye West have made good hip hop albums, and Eminem did make some good hits, what’s playing on the radio… just feels like I am losing brain cells just listening to it.

But, what IS happening in music, and on the charts is the female pop star. Hip hop may be dominating radio, but the girls are dominating the charts, on iTunes, every time I look, I see Adele, Katy Perry, Britney Spears, Rihanna, Lady Gaga with their latest hit. Even Jennifer Lopez, Black Eyed Peas (ok, not, a solo pop star, but Fergie does get a lot of attention), Nicki Minaj, Selena Gomez, Ke$ha, Jessie J, Taylor Swift are making the charts and making a team of female singers not to be messed with.

This year, the number one artist seems to rotate between Rihanna, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry and Britney Spears and Adele. The Fab Five in 2011. Their singles get leaked, or audio only samples are shown on Vevo before the official music video is released and their latest dance pop hit can’t help but make number one or a lot of noise on the internet.

What’s so intriguing about these artists? They all have an edge, their music is catchy, danceable and they all have some kind of scandal in one way or another. Maybe not so negative a scandal, as Katy Perry, with a wedding to Russell Brand, but definitely interesting and gossip-worthy, and Adele is too new to the scene to have any scandal. She’s also the credible singer, and not a dance pop star, but her music is making waves.

New starlets are crawling into the cracks, it seems like daily. Kerli, Adele, Oh Land, Clare Maguire, Ellie Goulding, Skylar Grey, Naomi Scott are these new up and comers that are making a splash in their own way.

I decided to do a little experiment. For today’s iTunes 200, I counted up the hits of all the female pop artists (excluding Country, so Taylor Swift and Carrie Underwood aren’t in this recording, but should be noted as they each have a position on the iTunes 200 as of today), and I wanted to calculate who was on top as of this moment.

Female pop solo artists make up 20% of the iTunes 200 as of today.

Adele and Katy Perry both have 6 songs on the charts, making them the leaders as of this moment. Adele, Katy Perry and Britney Spears round up the top 3 positions. Rihanna, Lady Gaga, Adele, Katy Perry and Britney Spears all together have 21 songs in the Top 200.

It’s interesting to see the numbers, I thought I would see more of a percentage, but when you think about it, just for female pop stars alone, it’s a big percentage. There is also a lot of country and hip hop and Glee songs (Glee has 7 songs on the chart).

Which Pop Star will reign supreme? Wait until the end of the year to see how it all goes down. For now, I’m enjoying this pop explosion, and looking forward to following up all the newbies on the music scene.

Remixes of the Top 3 Songs right now.

Katy Perry’s “E.T.”

Britney Spears’ “Till the World Ends”

Music Right Now – Britney Spears, Tinie Tempah and ABDC comes back…

What’s new? Britney Spears new music video “Till the World Ends”. The music video takes place on December 21st, 2012, apparently when the worlds ends. What does Brit do at the end of the world? Dance with her posse of dancers, that’s what! They hide underneath a sewer and just dance their brains out. I won’t ruin the end for you, you’ll have to just see it for yourself, do they survive?

Also burning up on the radio is Tinie Tempah’s feat. Eric Turner, “Written in the Stars”. I’m loving Turner’s voice, his hook/chorus is the best part of the song. I’m going to have to investigate Eric Turner and I’ll be back with my results. I think this song would be fabulous as an acoustic version…

And one of my favorite shows, America’s Best Dance Crew is back on MTV, premiering last night. I love watching great dancers and this is the best dance show on TV. Screw Dancing with the Stars, they’re not dancers, just learning to be a dancer, ABDC is young, fresh and innovative with their dances. A little off topic from my blog, but… music and dancing go hand in hand. Without music, there wouldn’t be dancing (and with out memory, there would be no music, and that’s for another blog for another day, if you wish…).

In celebration of ABDC, I will show you one of my favorite ABDC moments and another underrated show, LXD, one of my favorite episodes as well.

Beat Freaks

And I can’t embed the video for LXD, so click on this link here to watch “Robot Love Story”.http://www.hulu.com/watch/158343/the-lxd-robot-lovestory. Beautiful music, amazing dancing. A must-see if you enjoy dance.

Katy Perry’s “E.T.” New Music Video

I’ve already commented on how Katy Perry’s latest single, “E.T.” sounds like t.A.T.u.’s “All the Things She Said”. You can check out that blog here.

Now, moving on, I wanted to comment on this beautiful music video. The video starts in a junkyard and a faint old-fashioned song is heard in an echo. Can’t help but think of Disney’s Wall-E, where a robot is alone in a junkyard, looking for love. Katy Perry plays different aliens, floating in the air, and also on Earth. The make-up and colors are amazing. Music videos are blowing up lately. Lady Gaga, Britney Spears and Katy Perry have all recently released music videos with amazing colors, visuals, out-of-this-world effects and strong club anthems.

I’m loving it, I love pop, I love music videos, and the “music video” is back in style now. Now there is a ton of money poured into these music videos. I hope this lasts, because this is the ultimate art-form; to pair music to moving images.

I really don’t like Kanye West rapping graphically about sex in the music video. The lyrics that Perry sings isn’t so graphic, and West just seems like he doesn’t know what to say. And I’m sorry, but that sunglasses plug is just as subtle as the sun itself. @_@

Anyways, love the music video, I like the song, but as I mentioned in my other blog, I wish it didn’t sound so much like t.A.T.u. But I do see a trend in music videos and I really hope it lasts and continues to push boundaries in the arts.

New Music: Pop & Dance Tops the Charts

There’s a lot of good music coming out lately. Well, I love Pop/Dance music, so Ke$sha and Britney Spears’ latest is definitely on repeat at the moment. Right now on iTunes Top Ten; Jennifer Lopez, Britney Spears, Ke$ha, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, and Rihanna, round out the dance and pop hits, along with Cee Lo Green, Adele, Eminem and Pink. I’m a fan of dance and pop music, I love to dance, so I’m loving this new Pop/Dance phase going on on the charts right now.

Britney Spears “Till the World Ends” is the latest track to drop this week. A dance anthem. It’s fun, danceable and it grows on you. I also like how the lyrics are carefree, and also mocks the coming of 2012, when the Mayan calendar predicts the end of the world.

Also, Jennifer Lopez topping the iTunes charts, has a new music video with Pitbull. Again, more dancing, more fun. I liked it. The song takes a long time to get started, but when the chorus starts in, it’s fun, danceable and reminds me of J.Lo’s good ‘ol days with “Waiting for Tonight”.

Also, what’s on my playlist at the moment is Christina Aguilera’s “Bound to You”. Yes, not a Pop/Dance song, although Burlesque just released on video and watching this movie again, I was reminded of this beautiful ballad, and I cannot get it out of my head, so check it out.

What do you think of Pop/Dance music now? A lot of people complain music sucks and horrible music is being promoted. I think there is a lot of good music out there, and you need to look for it, whether it be through Pandora, iTunes, Vevo, the radio, etc. It’s out there. Find out what you like, and with social media, talk about it.

Britney Spears – Hold it Against Me Music Video

Britney Spears “Hold it Against Me” music video premiered today on Vevo.

I guess the “Princess of Pop” is back. Yeah, I cringe a little typing that, but I guess I’m falling into the dark side…

I admit, I hated Britney Spears for several good years. I didn’t like how she was acting like a puppet, only after her breakdown and when she sang about being crazy, did I start liking her music. I liked “Circus” and “Womanizer” and I accepted her for who she was. A crazy pop singer. I’m glad she embraces that as well, so I called a truce, and I give her a chance now.

“Hold it Against Me” was garnering some attention with thirteen teaser trailers for the music video leading up to the video being released today. Before the teasers, Vevo released her song as an “audio only” track. I find it fascinating how consumer driven social media has changed the way music is dropped. Before songs would get leaked, shown all over Youbtube before a music video or a song was available to download, and now record labels have embraced that tactic and release their own “audio only” track to be paraded around the net and then release a music video and available download. I think the marketing for this song is notable and will start becoming standard for future big releases.

Now, for the music video, the song, I already liked. It’s a dance song. People complained the lyrics were too simple. It’s not rocket science here, it’s just a danceable pop song, and if you enjoy dancing to pop music, then this song is perfectly acceptable. If you want something meaningful, then don’t listen to Britney Spears, go check out Ingrid Michaelson or Michael Buble or something.

The video has a very technological feel. Several TVs playing Britney Spears music videos. Nice, it shows how long she’s been in the game. She looks good, the outfits are interesting and there’s also quite a plug on Plenty of Fish, which Lady Gaga used in her “Telephone” music video. I wonder if Plenty of Fish is gaining more online daters from these music videos?

Spears also fights against herself (perhaps fighting her “crazy”?) and I like the paint coming out of her fingers and onto the white dress.

It’s different, it’s fun, it’s pop music.
