I have stated previously in this blog, that I wanted this blog to be about good music, and not to be like Perez Hilton and rip apart artists, condemn musicians and the like. I rather put out positive posts and instead of ripping apart a well-known artist, to use that time to talk about a lesser-known artist.
I don’t want to rip apart Lady Gaga, and I won’t, but I did want to comment on the reactions I’ve seen lately on her music. From personal Facebook fans to anonymous people on Vevo and Youtube, there is a backlash against Gaga that I’m wondering will garner steam and take down the eccentric Queen of the Pop Universe from her throne.
Lady Gaga’s latest songs seem like reincarnations of her previous hits, but not only that, the production doesn’t seem the same as the Fame Monster album. Lady Gaga’s first single, “Born this Way” was a disappointment. The lyrics were great, and amazing for the gay community. The song itself, not up to par as her previous hits. “Judas” came out, and just reminds me of a copy of “Bad Romance” and “Alejandro”. Then, “The Edge of Glory” came out, and it almost seems unrecognizable as the same artist that was so groundbreaking and poppy in the beginning of her career.
The fans have definitely noticed and are lashing out. What surprises me the most, is how quickly they turned on her. They loved her with a fervor, then they turn around and hate her, all over the internet. Denouncing her, saying they won’t be fans anymore. I can’t really say Lady Gaga sold out, she’s the most artistic she’s ever been in her career and her lyrics are more button-pushing than ever before. She is actually talking about issues in these songs, which is commendable, although the delivery isn’t coming across the same. With easier songs to stomach, dance songs can go straight into catchy dance hooks. With these issue-pushing songs, it’s not as catchy, and the songs are darker because the lyrics actually reflect the mood of the song.
I’m not a die-hard fan of Lady Gaga, my Queen of Pop will always be Madonna. Although, I respect Gaga’s artistic integrity and her messages she cultivates with her music videos. She’s the only “artist” as of this moment. Katy Perry and Rihanna are just regurgitating whatever images the major record labels want them to do, and we all know what happens if that goes on for too long (*coughs* Britney Spears). This is what I think, and I’m not sure what is really going on behind the scenes for all these artists, but sometimes it’s just plain noticeable when an artist is really relaying a message, or just playing dress up.
Those are my two cents on this Pop music battle, and as far as Lady Gaga’s future, hopefully she picks up with some original catchy songs, lest I fear the fans will bury her alive…

Funny that you mention Madonna as you’re talking about Gaga. When I first heard “Born This Way” playing over the radio at the gym, I thought it was Madonna on a come back. I still here Madonna signature every time I hear this song. Is it just me who hears it this way? Good post. 🙂
Yeah, actually everyone has been saying “Born this Way” sounds like “Express Yourself” from Madonna. Being a Madonna fan, I don’t even hear the comparison. I hear the beat is similar and the talking in the beginning is similar, but Gaga has done that before. It’s weird, because being a mega-Madonna fan like me, I don’t think it sounds similar. I think the structure is similar, but it’s a different song. *shrugs*. But you’re not alone, everyone else thinks that too.
I also thought immediately of Express Yourself when I first heard Born This Way. But, the song grew on me and I like it quite a bit now. I’m not as fond of Judas though, and have not heard The Edge of Glory Yet.
I was watching her concert on Madison Square Garden over the weekend and Gaga really reminds me of Madonna in general. I like her message and think she’s great.
I was surprised to see a negative article about her in Entertainment Weekly recently, but I guess you’re right that the backlash has begun.
The second album can be rocky for an artist and for fans that expect a certain sound. I’m sure she will weather through the storm though.

I think it’s just the nature of fame nowadays: stars are built up only for the purpose of immediately being torn down. Or maybe it’s nothing new (I’m trying to remember a song about that from years ago, but I can’t seem to pull it from my memory… lyrics “kick ’em when they’re up, kick ’em when they’re down…” what song is that? It’s gonna drive me nuts now…).
Gaga… I dunno. I’ll admit her songs are good to work out to, but I can’t say I’m a huge fan. I do think she has talent, though, and it would be interesting to see what would happen if she suddenly changed direction, stripped away all the glamor and costumes, and turned out an acoustic album…
Well, as humans, we want to believe in our own potential, so we root for others on the rise, believing if others reach their potential, we shall as well. Once the pinnacle has been reached, jealousy sets in, because our potential hasn’t risen as well, and the backlash begins.
Backlash is fueled by jealousy. In this case, the music isn’t the same as the past, but I think the fans should understand that Lady Gaga is finally reaching her artistic side that she’s been wanting to show since she started. I think things are going to get a lot weirder before she is torn down.

I was listening to her song years ago, and the Poker Face and Love Game are great songs, for me. But her next new songs are, not really that interesting anymore. The musics are so familiar, the darker side is getting not-funny-anymore. But at least she knows what she wants to show to the world so, I really am agree that Lady Gaga is the only “artist” of this moment.
